The history of the Claddagh ring dates back to the early 16th century, to the village of Claddagh in Co. Galway. Legend is that a fishing boat from the village was captured by pirates and the crew taken. Richard Joyce was to have been married that week but as one of the captured crew, he was sold into slavery where he learned the art of goldsmithing. He was released many years later and returned home to find the love of his heart. She too had waited for him and he made her a ring. The heart stands for love, the hands for friendship and the crown for loyalty. The Claddagh ring has become very popular all over the world, worn by all as a symbol of friendship, love and loyalty. Wearing the ring with the heart pointing away from your own heart denotes that you are "available" but worn with the heart pointing towards your own heart, means that you are "taken"! Castle

Wherever they went in Europe, the Normans built castles and Ireland was no exception. They also built abbeys, churches and friaries. All over Ireland Norman castles and keeps are found, some in ruins but some still in use at the present day.

Celtic High Cross

An even more distinctive feature of the Irish countryside and dating from an earlier century are the magnificent High Crosses of Ireland. Intricately carved with animals, birds, celtic designs and detailed scenes from the scriptures most of them have the stone circle which, like the Roman laurel wreath, is a sign of victory, Christ's victory over sin and death.

Dolmen

Many such pre-historic grave monuments are found throughout Ireland. Burial deposits have been excavated at some of these and suggest that the dolmens may be as much as six thousand years old.

Gaelic

The Gaelic language is one of the two Official Languages of Ireland and is recognized as such by EU. It was probably brought to Ireland by the invading Celts from Europe and developed its own distinctive form. It is currently having a revival as a spoken language among Irish people abroad.

Harp

The Irish harp is a beautiful instrument and is an official symbol of Ireland appearing on Government papers. For the early monks it symbolised David the author of the psalms while the great Gaelic harpists carried our Irish traditions on through troubled times. Ireland's musical heritage is renowned worldwide in terms of music, lyrics and dance.

Ireland

The map of Ireland is dear to all Irish people. The first known "map" of Ireland is part of a larger map printed in 1482 now in the Congress library in Washington. It was constructed from the latitudes and longitudes given by Ptolomy in his work "Geography". Ptolomy was a Greek mathematician, traveler and geographer who lived from 90 AD to 168 AD. He gave excellent accounts of Ireland in his work and his map is very recognizable today.

King Sitric

Sitric "silkbeard" was the Norse King of Dublin who issued the first Irish coins - silver pennies about 995AD. He had an Irish mother and he married a daughter of Brian Boru. He founded Christ Church in Dublin.

L for Literature

From the early myths of spoken literature, the medieval manuscripts, the poems and songs of the Irish bards, right up to our own times with Joyce, Yeats, Beckett, O'Riordan, O'Cadhain, Heaney and many others, the Irish have excelled in Literature in Latin, in Irish and in English.

Newgrange

This is the famous engraving in the chamber at Newgrange, Ireland. Newgrange is the oldest megalithic structure in Europe which is known for certain to have had an astronomical function. It is aligned with the Winter Solstice, as it would have occurred more than 5,000 years ago.

Ogham Stones

These standing stones are found all over the South and West of Ireland. The inscriptions are cut into the edge of the stone using the ancient Ogham alphabet. They date from about 300 to 500AD, but it is thought that the alphabet may actually have been used much earlier, being carved on pieces of yew-wood and that it was a sacred alphabet used by the druids.

Salmon

In Irish folklore the salmon represents wisdom. The salmon appears on our coinage and Irish Salmon is famous for its flavor and texture. The legend of the Salmon of Knowledge tells the story of Fionn MacCumhaill and symbolizes Ireland's legendary heroes and our island heritage.

St. Patrick

For the Irish people St. Patrick has always been the focus of our Christian faith which he did most to establish in Ireland. He is also the author of our oldest surviving manuscript. St. Patrick used the shamrock to explain the Christian Trinity. Legend also has it that he banished snakes from Ireland.

Horse

The central plains of Ireland are ideal for rearing horses. The open grazing gives them strong bones. The Irish have always excelled as breeders and trainers and Irish horses are sought throughout the world for show-jumping and racing. Irish sports stars have performed with great honor in our national sports and international sporting events.

Long ago there was a king in Ireland called Lir who was the father of four beautiful children, a son, a daughter and twin sons. Their mother (daughter of the High King of Ireland) died when they were still young and needing loving care. And so it came about that King Lir, who dearly loved his four children and wanted them to have a new mother, married his wife's sister, Aoife, and gave them into her charge.

But Aoife, seeing King Lir playing with the children and giving them so much of his time, became jealous of them and thought how she might have her King all to herself and the children out of the way. One night she secretly bargained with a druid for the use of his magic wand and made her plans while the children were asleep.

Next morning, when they woke to a beautiful summer's day, Aoife had perfected her plan. "Come with me," she said to the children, "Today I am going to take you to the lake and when the sun gets hot you can all go into the cool waters for a swim." When noonday came and the sun was at its height in the sky Aoife saw a dark cloud coming from the North and, fearing that her plan would be spoiled, shouted "Quickly now, into the water with you all." Then Aoife with the druid's magic wand cast a spell on the four children, turning them one by one into swans.The great dark cloud from the North turned black, shut out the sun, burst into thunder and with a scream Aoife disappeared into the cloud and was never seen again. But Aoife, with her druid's wand, had not taken away the children's human voices, she had told them they would be set free again from the spell in 900 years time when St. Patrick would come to Ireland and they would hear the sound of the first Christian bells.

And so, at the end of 300 years on lake Davra, 300 years on the sea of Moyle and another 300 years on the lake isle of Glora in Mayo, the day came when they heard the distant sound of one the first Christian bells to ring in Ireland. They immediately followed its sound until they came to the house of a Christian called Caomhog and told him what had happened to them so long ago.

They were lovingly cared for by the people of the house and people came from near and far to see the swans who could talk and sing. Then one day a princess sent her servants to try and steal the swans. But just as the servants laid hands on them the time had come for the swans to become human again and the servants ran away terrified.

Now that the swans were again human, though 900 years old, Caomhog had them baptized and the bells rang out at their Christening. Soon afterwards, when they had died of old age, Caomhog dreamt on the very same night that he saw four beautiful children - a boy, his sister and two twin brothers flying out over the lake then straight up to heaven and he knew that they were really the Children of Lir.

Aodh, Fionnula, Fiachra and Conn.

Salmon of Knowledge Finegas was a poet. He was one of the wisest men in Ireland. He lived near the River Boyne. Finegas read books and wrote poems. Finegas was watching all the time to try and see the salmon of knowledge in the river. The salmon of knowledge was a magic fish. The first person to taste the salmon would be the wisest person in Ireland. Its skin was the color of gold. Its eyes were magic. A lot of people tried to catch it but they failed. There was no school but young warriors were taught by wise men like Finegas. People went to live with poets and they learned a lot and after that people became true warriors. Fionn was a son of a warrior called Cumhall. Fionn was training to be a warrior. Then Fionn went to live with Finegas the poet. Suddenly Finegas saw a huge powerful fish swimming in the river. It was the salmon of knowledge. He had never seen a fish like it before. He rushed to get a strong net. Fionn was sitting with his back to the river so he never saw the salmon. Finegas was very careful not to look into its eyes because if you did you would fall into a deep sleep. Finegas tried to catch the fish but couldn't. All of a sudden the fish jumped high into the air towards him. The old poet was taken by surprise when he looked at the fish. He fell fast asleep. Fionn saw him asleep and rushed to wake him up before the salmon got away. When Finegas woke up he asked Fionn to fetch him a cloth. Then Finegas covered his eyes with the cloth. He threw in his net again. For hours and hours he tried to catch the fish. Night was falling. He had one last try. This time he was lucky. He caught the salmon. The huge fish struggled to get out. It pulled and tossed and turned but could not escape. Finegas was tired after this so he told Fionn to cook the fish. Finegas warned Fionn not to eat the fish, not even a mouthful. Fionn promised he would not eat any of the salmon. Fionn built a fire and when it was ready he placed the fish over the fire. A drop of oil went onto his thumb. Fionn put his thumb in his mouth. When the salmon was done he brought the fish to Finegas. The wise poet noticed there was something different. His cheeks were redder and his eyes were a lot brighter. "Have you eaten any of the salmon?" Finegas asked Fionn. Fionn told him the truth. "I did not eat any of the fish. Finegas was still not happy. "Have you even tasted the fish," he asked. Then Fionn remembered that he had burnt his thumb and put it in his mouth. He told this to Finegas. Finegas knew at once he had the wisdom of the salmon of knowledge. At first he was very sad. He knew he would never be the wisest man in Ireland. But he was happy that Fionn got the gift. Finegas knew that Fionn would become the greatest warrior that the Fianna had ever known.

Ahenny is an unusual place - a graveyard with two ancient and striking Celtic Crosses. The crosses differ from most ancient monastic crosses - there is nothing in the Annals or in any other records to explain why they are there. According to local legend there were once three crosses in Ahenny, but that the most beautiful was stolen and lost at sea. Local legend also has it that the crosses marked the burial place of seven bishops of the early Irish Church. This in itself would be unusual as Irish High Crosses typically living persons and were situated in thriving monastic communities not burial sites. Scholars believe that the Ahenny crosses were carved at an early date, perhaps in the 8th Century. Our cross is a reproduction of the North Ahenny Cross. The faces have no scriptural carvings but are most beautifully decorated. At the center of the cross are five projecting bosses, reminding us of St. Martin’s cross in Iona, and indicating the importance of Ahenny in the past. The head and shaft of the cross are covered in elaborate spiral, interface and fret designs. Dr. Peter Harbison in his scholarly work ‘High Crosses of Ireland’ describes the head of the west face as ‘covered like a spider’s web with a single panel of intricately composed coiled spirals’. The faces and ring of the cross are surrounded by a high relief rope molding added. The rest of the decoration is in low relief suggesting that the cross must have originally been colored. It is only through coloration that the impressive detailed work of the sculptor could have been fully appreciated.

The beautifully carved high crosses of early Christian times are unique to Ireland and Britain and are famous throughout Europe. The finest of them are the Scripture Crosses which tell the Bible story in a series of detailed panels. The fullest series of scenes is on the tall cross at Ardboe in Tyrone, on the west shore of Lough Neagh, not far from Coagh. The cross at Ardboe is unusually tall, standing some 5.6 meters high. It is profusely decorated with abstract designs and a series of figure sculptures which are treated with exceptional detail and fullness. The balance between form and decoration, between ornament and narrative, and the delicate execution of the abstract design, contrasting with the robust and lively realism of the figure sculpture, combine to set this cross amongst the most distinguished of Irish monuments. The East face is distinct. It features Daniel between two rampant lions, the Sacrifice of Isaac, the Children in the Fiery Furnace, Adam and Eve, two souls in scales above the flames of Hell, The Twelve Apostles surrounding Christ in Judgment. The South face features Old Testament scenes including Cain and Abel, and the life of David, including David with an open sling before Goliath on his knees. The North face displays New Testament scenes, including the Baptism of Christ and the Massacre of the Innocents. The West face also features New Testament scenes, including the Adoration of the Magi, the Last Supper, Christ entering Jerusalem, the Arrest of Christ and the Crucifixion. This cross is one of the most beautifully sited of all the High Crosses of Ireland. It is approached by a narrow road where it stands majestic, overlooking the ruins of a church and beside a graveyard which runs down to the shores of Lough Neagh. There is also a ‘wishing tree’ nearby. It is easy to imagine the celebrations that took place here on the day this great cross was completed.

14K Cross Of Duleek

Duleek was an important ecclesiastical center in the early Christian centuries and its Cross is unusual and very interesting. It was founded by St. Ciaran (or Kennean) who was himself baptized by St.Patrick in 472 AD. Here he built the first stone church recorded in Ireland. The name of the town comes from the Irish ‘daimh liag’, a house of stones. The center grew and flourished for more than 700 years and aerial photographs of the town show how the ecclesiastical boundaries still impose themselves on the street plan today. Duleek became as important as Armagh, Clonard or Clonmacnoise and included hospitals, almshouses and sanctuaries. It was a resting place for the bodies of Brian Boru and his son-in law where they lay in state on their way to burial in Armagh in 1014 after the Battle of Clontarf. Later an Augustinian priory was set up there by the O’Kelly family. When the Norman, Hugh de Lacy built himself a castle nearby he granted the Church of St. Ciaran to the Augustinians of Gloucestershire in 1180. Ironically, the Normans had themselves pillaged the Priory a few years earlier. The unusual feature of the High Cross is that one face, the East face, is completely covered in Celtic curvilinear and geometric designs. At the bottom on the West face there is a scene with three figures which may be the Holy Family or it may be the presentation of our Lord in the Temple. Above are two panels each with two figures facing, one with hands clasped, one with hands raised, at the center is a Crucifixion scene and at the top of the cross a scene from the story of the monastery. The story tells how St. Adamnon visited the tomb of St. Ciaran where his body lay undisturbed. St. Adamnon broke the rule and touched the body whereupon his eye was struck out. Later as he fasted as a penance and his eye was miraculously restored. The top panel shows the Restoration. On the East face there appears to be a symbolic vine, while the center shows a design with seven bosses. Early Irish artists constructed everything with 'meaning and exactitude’ (Hilary Richardson, 1984). They adopted the designs of the Celts and developed a new symbolic language using design and the symbolism of numbers to convey the Christian message.

‘Before he passed into Britain he built a noble monastery in Ireland which, from the great numbers of oaks is ... called dermach, the field of oaks’. That is how an early writer described the founding of the monastery at Durrow by St. Columba - also known as St Columcille. Durrow is almost in the center of Ireland. Only a few fragments remain of the buildings that were erected during and after the lifetime of St. Columba who died in AD 597. One beautiful Celtic Cross remains, the cross now known as the Cross of Durrow. At the base of this cross is a barely legible inscription which reads ‘Pray for Dubtach who erected this cross’. Dubtach was the head of the Columban order between 927 and 938 AD. The cross, in white sandstone, is very sensitively carved. The West face of the cross has the scene of the Crucifixion. The scenes below probably represent incidents in the Passion. At the foot of the cross there are soldiers at the tomb. The East face shows the triumph of Christ - Christ in Judgment. Nearby is David with a harp or lyre. His psalms were recited almost continuously in the monasteries so he was a very revered figure. On this face there is also a representation of the sacrifice of Isaac and at the bottom three figures with angels. Is this the Trinity, or the Holy Family? It may indeed be both. There are many beautiful panels of varying interlace design. This was a most important cross, a sign of the importance of Durrow. We get a further glimpse of the importance of the monastery of Durrow in the Long Room of the library of Trinity College, Dublin. Many visitors go to see the Book of Kells with its magnificent designs and lettering. Not so many know about the Book of Durrow, a copy of the Gospels made almost a hundred years earlier that is also on display in the Long Room. It is a smaller carefully planned volume. There are ‘carpet’ pages of design facing the opening pages of the Gospels, beautiful initial capital letters at the beginning of each Gospel and a full page symbol for each of the Four Evangelists.

This Cross of St. Patrick and St. Columba is an authentic copy of the front and back faces of the original cross in Kells, Co Meath Ireland. Columba founded a monastic settlement in Iona, an island off the coast of Scotland in 561. It was plundered repeatedly by Vikings and in 806 the surviving monks moved to Kells. It was here that Ireland’s best collection of High Crosses was assembled. The Cross of Kells, like the other local crosses, is weatherworn but it is still possible to discern its great beauty and unusual features. The scenes depicted in the panels of the cross are from the Old and New Testaments.

Moone in Co. Kildare is the site of the early Columban foundation - ‘Moin Cholum Cille’. You can see the tall slender Celtic Crosses at Monasterboice standing where the monks placed them. The Cross of Moone was lost for centuries, buried and in pieces. In the middle of the 19th century, just after the Great Famine, a local mason, Michael O’Shaughnessy, was moving slabs of stone from the ruins of the Abbey when he unearthed the base and head of the cross. Thankfully he recognized their importance, and they were set up near the place they were found at the south east of the ruined Abbey Church. Years later when workmen were digging a grave in the grounds of the ruin, the shaft of the cross was uncovered. Later still, in 1893, the pieces were skillfully put together by three O’Shaughnessy brothers, sons of Michael O’Shaughnessy who first found parts of the cross forty years before and lived to see the cross erected. The Cross of Moone probably dates from the early 9th Century. It appears to be in the tradition of the ‘Midland’ crosses, the prototypes of the great crosses carved and erected in the Northern Province in the latter part of the 9th century and the early 10th century. It has the ringed head which we all associate with Celtic Crosses. In the Crucifixion scene on the base, the figure is draped but, unusually, the spear is shown piercing Our Lord’s right side. The cross, which is made of granite, probably from Castledermot, also has intricate Celtic curvilinear and geometric designs, as well as rough-hewn and stylized human figures. Scholars say that it is the first cross on which scenes from the Old Testament occur in a regular program, an important development in the history of Irish High Crosses. The exquisite overall proportions of the Cross of Moone proclaim its maker a man of outstanding visual artistry.

The Cross of Muiredeach at Monasterboice in Co. Louth is one of the most beautiful of the Irish High Crosses still standing. At the base of the West side can still be seen the inscription in old Irish ‘OR DO MUIREDEACH LASNDERNAD IN CHROS’ which translates as ‘A prayer for Muiredeach, for whom this cross was made’. Most scholars think that this applied to Muiredeach, son of Domhaill, an abbot of Monasterboice who died around AD 922. The main sculpture on the circular head on the West face is an elaborate Crucifixion scene while on the East faces there is an even more interesting and elaborate depiction of the Last Judgment. The face of the shaft on the West side shows incidents in the life of Our Lord, incidents from the Old Testament, stories from the lives of the Saints and symbolic figures. The scenes on the shaft of the cross are read from the bottom up. They appear to represent Christ seized in the Garden; ‘Doubting Thomas’ thrusting his hand into Our Lord’s side; and Christ seated between Peter and Paul, giving the keys to the one and the Book of the Gospel to the other. Henry Morris suggested a more colorful interpretation - the bottom panel depicts two Viking soldiers roughly seizing a central figure the Celtic Abbot. In the panel above the same two mustached ‘Vikings’ are shown wearing ecclesiastical robes, while the central figure, clean shaven and with a coronal tonsure as before, has his hand raised in blessing. In the top panel all three ecclesiastics have Viking mustaches, and they hold the Keys and the Book of Gospels. This is the story of the encounter of the Abbot with the Viking invaders; their conversion in time to Christianity and acceptance as monks at Monasterboice, and finally a time when a Viking becomes the Abbot of the monastery. There is some historical support for this theory. One of the first permanent Viking settlements, a fortified stronghold, was made eight miles from Monasterboice at Annagassan on the Louth coast in AD 840. It is recorded that from here the Vikings plundered Clonmacnoise in the west in 841 and Armagh in the North in 850. Yet Monasterboice, a couple of hours march away, was never plundered by them. They remained at Annagassan until 925 and must have had contact with the monastery. If some became Christians and Monks, this could explain Monasterboice’s immunity from attack.

14K Cross of Scriptures / Clonmacnoise

The city of the seven churches, Clonmacnoise, was founded by St Ciaran in 548 AD and lasted a thousand years. Today it is a quiet ruined abbey, but at its full flowering it was a bustling important center, a university city on a major Irish highway - the River Shannon. Clonmacnoise was a center of classical and religious learning, of art, calligraphy, design, and of gold and silver craftsmanship. Kuno Meyer, the German Scholar who was professor of Irish at the University of Liverpool at the turn of this century, wrote of this period that ‘Ireland drew upon herself the attention of the whole world as the great seminary of Christian and classical learning’. Clonmacnoise grew and prospered and by 800 AD a Gaelic poet was writing: Ailill the king is vanished, Vanished Croghan’s fort, Kings to Clonmacnoise now, Come to pay their court little places taken, First by twos and threes, Are like Rome reborn, Peopled sanctuaries. (Translation Frank O’Connor ‘Kings, Lords and Common’. New York 1959) It was around this time that the Cross of the Scriptures was carved and erected. It has elaborate carvings both of Scriptural and contemporary scenes as well as animals and birds. One panel on the East face shows an ecclesiastic and a warrior with a sword and between them a staff with leaves or flowers. It is intriguing to think that this may depict St. Ciaran’s staff, and that the panel may be showing ‘a swearing on the staff’, a custom which is known to have existed but the details of which are lost. The Last Judgment is shown at the center on the East face, and on the West face, the Crucifixion. There is a lovely touch at the bottom of the West shaft where there is a panel showing Our Lord’s body in the tomb. Two snoozing soldiers are sitting on the tomb while in Our Lord’s mouth a small bird breaths life – a symbol of His imminent resurrection.

14K Cross of St. Martin / Iona

Iona is a small island off the Isle of Mull in western Scotland. It has been a ‘holy isle’ since time immemorial. One of its early Gaelic names was ‘Isle of the Druids’. St. Columba (Columkille) went to Iona in 563 and founded a settlement in the Celtic style, where monks living in separate cells, coming together for meals and community prayer. They traveled from Iona to mainland Scotland, to preach the Gospel and establish other settlements. Columba returned to Ireland in 575 to defend the poets of Ireland at the Council of Drumcaet. When in Ireland he visited some of his earlier settlements and founded the monastic settlement at Drumcliffe. He then returned to his ‘home’ in Iona, and died there in 597. Iona continued to grow and flourish. During the 7th Century it had the largest library in Europe and up to 300 Celtic Crosses. Repeated Viking invasions led to the destruction of the library and almost all the crosses - there are now only three remaining. The most famous of the three is the cross dedicated to St. Martin of Tours, which was probably carved at the end of the 8th Century. Martin lived in France in the last years of the 4th Century. He was a Roman soldier who became a Christian but remained in the army to complete his appointed term. There is a famous El Greco painting of St. Martin sharing his Roman cloak with a beggar. At some point in his life he read about St. Antony of Egypt who had left city life to live as a hermit in the desert. This appealed to Martin and when he left the army he set up a hermitage near Poitiers in France. Each monk/hermit had his own cell. They all met for meals and communal prayers and were bound in obedience to the head of the settlement. When Martin was appointed Bishop of Tours he moved his fellow hermits to a settlement outside Tours and continued to live among them. No one knows how a cross on Iona in Scotland, an island that had such close and continuing connection with the Columbian monasteries in Ireland, came to be dedicated to this French saint. Irish monks were familiar with the ‘desert fathers’ St. Antony and St. Paul and perhaps it was the fact that St. Martin also turned his back on life’s comforts to live a life of contemplation and prayer that drew them to celebrate him.

14K Cross of St. Patrick / Carndonagh

This lovely cross, known as the Cross of St. Patrick, is in Carndonagh in the north of Donegal. Originally Carndonagh was a bishopric, said to have been established by St. Patrick himself. Because this cross does not have the ring that we all associate with Celtic crosses it was thought that it must have been erected in the 7th or 8th centuries - a forerunner of the ringed cross. Now, however, when scholars consider the quality of the carving they believe that the cross was made in the 9th or 10th century. Its intricate interlace patterns are similar to the decoration found in the pages of a late 10th century Irish psalter. The figure on the shaft of the West face is thought to represent either the Crucifixion or Christ in glory with his arms raised in blessing. In the early Church the cross was a sign of victory over sin and death so it could represent both! Below the figure of Christ there are figures of three unidentified ecclesiastics.

14K Drumcliffe Cross

‘Beloved to my heart also in the West Drumcliffe, at Culcinne’s strand.’ This line is from a poem attributed to St Columcille (or St. Columba as he is also known) the founder of the monastery at Drumcliffe. He was born in Donegal, a member of a royal family. He studied at bardic and monastic schools and after his ordination he traveled Ireland and founded several monastic settlements, including Derry, near his own birthplace Durrow and Kells. On one of his journeys he made a hurried copy of the Book of Psalters belonging to St. Finnian of Moville. A dispute arose about the ownership of the copy and the High King of Ireland Diarmuid gave the famous judgment ‘to every cow its calf, to every book its copy’. Shortly after this event a fugitive from King Diarmuid sought sanctuary with Columcille. Diarmuid’s men pursued him and violating the law of sanctuary, killed him. Columcille responded with anger and called on his royal kinsman for support. There followed a bloody battle at Cuil-Dréinne at which the King was defeated. Columcille was overcome with remorse. He felt that his copyright argument with the High King had provoked Diarmuid to violate the sanctuary leading to the battle. It is unclear whether he was sent into exile by a Synod or whether exile was a self-imposed penance – in any event Columcille left for Scotland where he founded more well known monastic settlements. Columcille made one famous return journey to Ireland to the Council of Druim Ceat in Co Meath. He visited Clonmacnoise and on his journey up the West coast of Sligo he founded the monastic settlement of Drumcliffe not far from the scene of the fateful battle. He is said to have left the bishop’s crozier there as a sign of his love. The magnificent cross erected there later is a tribute to the family of Columcille who were patrons of the Church for generations. The cross has fantastic animals in full relief as well as Scriptural scenes. The grave of the poet William Butler Yeats is nearby. It is marked by a stone which bears his epitaph ‘Cast a cold eye on life, on death, Horseman pass by’.

The beautifully carved high crosses of early Christian times are unique to Ireland and Britain and are famous throughout Europe. The finest of them are the ScriptureCrosses which tell the Bible story in a series of detailed panels. The fullest series of scenes is on the tall cross at Ardboe in Tyrone, on the west shore of Lough Neagh, not far from Coagh. The cross at Ardboe is unusually tall, standing some 5.6 meters high. It is profusely decorated with abstract designs and a series of figure sculptures which are treated with exceptional detail and fullness. The balance between form and decoration, between ornament and narrative, and the delicate execution of the abstract design, contrasting with the robust and lively realism of the figure sculpture, combine to set this cross amongst the most distinguished of Irish monuments. The East face is distinct. It features Daniel between two rampant lions, the Sacrifice of Isaac, the Children in the Fiery Furnace, Adam and Eve, two souls in scales above the flames of Hell, The Twelve Apostles surrounding Christ in Judgment. The South face features Old Testament scenes including Cain and Abel, and the life of David, including David with an open sling before Goliath on his knees. The North face displays New Testament scenes, including the Baptism of Christ and the Massacre of the Innocents. The West face also features New Testament scenes, including the Adoration of the Magi, the Last Supper, Christ entering Jerusalem, the Arrest of Christ and the Crucifixion. This cross is one of the most beautifully sited of all the High Crosses of Ireland. It is approached by a narrow road where it stands majestic, overlooking the ruins of a church and beside a graveyard which runs down to the shores of Lough Neagh. There is also a ‘wishing tree’ nearby. It is easy to imagine the celebrations that took place here on the day this great cross was completed.

Moone in Co. Kildare is the site of the early Columban foundation - ‘Moin Cholum Cille’. You can see the tall slender Celtic Crosses at Monasterboice standing where the monks placed them. The Cross of Moone was lost for centuries, buried and in pieces. In the middle of the 19th century, just after the Great Famine, a local mason, Michael O’Shaughnessy, was moving slabs of stone from the ruins of the Abbey when he unearthed the base and head of the cross. Thankfully he recognised their importance, and they were set up near the place they were found at the south east of the ruined Abbey Church. Years later when workmen were digging a grave in the grounds of the ruin, the shaft of the cross was uncovered. Later still, in 1893, the pieces were skillfully put together by three O’Shaughnessy brothers, sons of Michael O’Shaughnessy who first found parts of the cross forty years before and lived to see the cross erected. The Cross of Moone probably dates from the early 9th Century. It appears to be in the tradition of the ‘Midland’ crosses, the prototypes of the great crosses carved and erected in the Northern Province in the latter part of the 9th century and the early 10th century. It has the ringed head which we all associate with Celtic Crosses. In the Crucifixion scene on the base, the figure is draped but, unusually, the spear is shown piercing Our Lord’s right side. The cross, which is made of granite, probably from Castledermot, also has intricate Celtic curvilinear and geometric designs, as well as rough-hewn and stylized human figures. Scholars say that it is the first cross on which scenes from the Old Testament occur in a regular program, an important development in the history of Irish High Crosses. The exquisite overall proportions of the Cross of Moone proclaim its maker a man of outstanding visual artistry.

At the base of the West side can still be seen the inscription in old Irish ‘OR DO MUIREDEACH LASNDERNAD IN CHROS’ which translates as ‘A prayer for Muiredeach, for whom this cross was made’. Most scholars think that this applied to Muiredeach, son of Domhaill, an abbot of Monasterboice who died around AD 922. The main sculpture on the circular head on the West face is an elaborate Crucifixion scene while on the East faces there is an even more interesting and elaborate depiction of the Last Judgment. The face of the shaft on the West side shows incidents in the life of Our Lord, incidents from the Old Testament, stories from the lives of the Saints and symbolic figures. The scenes on the shaft of the cross are read from the bottom up. They appear to represent Christ seized in the Garden; ‘Doubting Thomas’ thrusting his hand into Our Lord’s side; and Christ seated between Peter and Paul, giving the keys to the one and the Book of the Gospel to the other. Henry Morris suggested a more colorful interpretation - the bottom panel depicts two Viking soldiers roughly seizing a central figure the Celtic Abbot. In the panel above the same two mustached ‘Vikings’ are shown wearing ecclesiastical robes, while the central figure, clean shaven and with a coronal tonsure as before, has his hand raised in blessing. In the top panel all three ecclesiastics have Viking moustaches, and they hold the Keys and the Book of Gospels. This is the story of the encounter of the Abbot with the Viking invaders; their conversion in time to Christianity and acceptance as monks at Monasterboice, and finally a time when a Viking becomes the Abbot of the monastery. There is some historical support for this theory. One of the first permanent Viking settlements, a fortified stronghold, was made eight miles from Monasterboice at Annagassan on the Louth coast in AD 840. Cross of Turin THE TURIN CROSS “He was wounded for our iniquities and bruised for our sins.” (Isaias 1: 6)

For the first time ever, forensic science has been able to reveal the true manner and form in which Our Blessed Lord, Jesus Christ, was crucified. The Turin Cross is based on scientific analysis of the Shroud of Turin, the burial cloth of our Blessed Savior. The Shroud presents us with the tangible evidence for the Gospel accounts of Our Lord’s torture, crucifixion, death, burial and resurrection.

1. Blood traces on the shroud reveal the angle that Our Lord’s arms hung on the cross and the fact that the arms were tied tightly to the beams of the cross. This evidence gives us the shape of the Turin Cross: exactly that which appears on the Gothic chasuble.

2. The Shroud proves the nails were driven through the hand near the wrist.

3. The Shroud indicates that the right leg was stretched flat on the cross and the left foot was nailed on top of the right foot using only one nail. To accomplish this, a cavity for the right heel was carved into the cross, the right leg was stretched flat on the cross and the left foot was nailed through the right foot onto a wedge shaped foot rest.

4. Traces of blood on the Shroud indicate that the Crown of Thorns also covered the top of Our Lord’s head.

5. The Shroud indicates that the lance entered Our Lord’s side between the 5th and 6th ribs of the right side while He was still on the cross.

6. The Shroud most clearly shows the extent and intensity of the Scourging of Our Lord. He was lacerated front and back, by multiple persons, with multiple instruments, such that His whole body was criss-crossed with bloody wounds, bruises and swelling sores.
