St. Brigid is one of Ireland's patron Saints and her feast day is February 1st. Her body Her body lies at Downpatrick beside the graves of St. Patrick and St. Columba. It is believed that when visiting and caring for an ill Pagan Chieftain, Saint Brigid wove a cross out of the rushes which were commonly spread across the floor for warmth and cleanliness in ancient times. She used the woven cross to illustrate the power of the Christian God to this man before his death. He was so impressed with the meaning of the Cross that he converted to Christianity before his death. It is believed that this simple rush Cross, usually placed over a door, keeps evil and hunger from the homes in which it is displayed.
